Okayama JALT

It was very interesting to participate to the Okayama JALT workshop today.
I would like to meet the ex and new chairs.  I was glad to see them and  also Mutsumi san again.
My colleague and I are going to give a long presentation in September in 2012 in front of them.
Ahhhhh I need to prepare the presentation  a lot.

I have decided to attend to their workshops from today. I would like to make the relationship closer and make a rapport before our presentation. Plus it was a bonus for me to see a teacher works at the Agricultural faculty again.

Overall I had a great day today :-)

One of the other day

Memo for my research

During cooking, I got an interesting idea for Okayama JALT in September in 2012. I am going to write a belief proposal today. I will ask my students in 2012 AY/ first year students who record their interactions in my lessons. Collect classroom interaction data and transcribe.
Analysis methods: the same as what I did for my MA thesis. (5different language features)
This time, I will use SPSS for the reliability to make some connections how motivation link with their language improvement.

I will be off to the school and finish TOEIC/ my paper work between 10:30 and 12:15.  13:10-14:04 heading to Okayama
15:00-17:00 JALT Okayama workshop

A one-day conference from JALT Learner Development SIG: Realizing Autonomy

Day1: Realizing Autonomy

Prof. Tim Murphey arise my awareness through his presentation autonomy, agency, and social capital.
Whenever I involved in his workshops and presentations, I receive new messages from it even though his presentations are similar.

Finally I managed to have a small discussion with Prof. Tim Murphey during the workshop. It took me about 2 years to talk to him in terms of English education. That dat, It was hard for me to go down to the earth (hee heee)

Now I got his references list so I learn from readings. My next aim is to negotiate with him about my resarch.

Learning

September 18th 2011
I stayed home and complete to make one lesson: worksheets, activities and power point slides. I have many catch up works but one done (finally). I need to rest my brain so I have been reading this vook: Translation in Language Teaching (2010) by Guy Cook.
Tomorrow, I need to sum up a demo lesson for this Saturday at Rits. Oh boy.

September 15th and 16th
Business trop
There was a teacher training for new teachers who work at national universities. IT was my first time to have discussion with people who graduated from the University of Tokyo. That was very challenging for me to maintain conversations. I do not know why the person works at junior college with holding a MA degree from Tokyo Uni. Anyway, life is complicated as it is.

I needed some time to recover from the training. Now I feel okay.

New environment

I finished to make lesson power point/work sheet/lesson plants for week2. I had been concentrated on making it for a while so I am very tired.

I am very nervous to see a new teacher tomorrow. I hope he is a hardworker like a Japanese one. My colleague went back to his home country due to see his friend. We will have a meeting for choosing textbooks for the next academic year without him.  Talking about the text books, I need to make a summary what's good and bad to use the current textbooks.

Well well changing environment now.... ahhhhh

Aug 30, 2011

Day1: Job hunting.

Day1: Job hunting done. I took many pictures for CVs. Today's aim was to send my cvs to 2 different universities. I modified the CV and printed out them. These things were on my to do list for today. 90% done.  Now I realised that it is impossible to manage the amount of salary to maintain this quality of research.  I would like to buy books for my study. I would like to go to conferences and workshops. To gain knowledge and teaching techniques eventually contribute to students and the university where I have worked. However if I do not have enough or minimum financial resource, I cannot have better learning and teaching. So I have decided to find better jobs. According to the current university, they may consider to raise my monthly saraly.

My aim for these two years in this university is that to have 5 publications and 5 presentations. I have got 2 publications so far so 3 more to go. I am not so ready to move out from this university but I am getting there. Well well, I would like to change the place to teach by the end of the next academic year. These days I feel so uneasy to continue this kind of life. I sometime feel unfair to compare my workloads and the monthly salary. I am not satisfied with this salary. Someone told me that it is better than 0 yen but you know it is difficult for me to survive realistically.

Well well.....

Now, I would like to focus on making lesson plants. Week 2 !  Text analysis now.

TESOL certificate workshop in TKO.

A 5-Day TESOL certification course:

I completed the 120 hours TESOL certification lesson. Here come my assignments to read all reading materials. I am so excited to read these articles. I need to write essays in order to get the final certification.

One more thing. I would like to start my job hunting again. I have printed out my resumes and front pages already. What I need is my pictures.  I can handle a few additional classes for the next year. One more year's patience and then I will be a PhD candidate. I would like to be positive in order to gain many things during my stay in Japan.

TESOL certificate workshop in TKO: Day2

Day2:

Dr. R D from Keimyung, Korean was one of our lecturers for TESOL certification workshops in TKO.
Before he started his lecture, he was looking for someone who is the youngest one in the room. He looked around and found me.

He asked me " I assume you are the youngest one in this room. Don't you think so? "
And I said: "you never know. I might be not."
This teacher immediately asked me that " would you please make me a coffee ? Because I did not know how to make it."
 And I said, "WHAT?"

There are many things wrong with many different levels.
1)  I payed to come here in order to learn how to teach but not make a coffee for him.
2) The youngest woman in the community's job is making a coffee for a professor.... is it???
3) How come he could become a prof even though he cannot make a coffee.
4) If he were a older Japanese prof who asked me to make a coffee I felt it was okay but he is THE American who treats women as お茶くみ women.... I still feel so uneasy on his value.
 5) It was my first time to talk to this prof and he asked me to make a coffee for him. I felt it was very rude.
6) This incident is the gender discrimination, academic harassment and sexual harassment.

90% of the females participants in the TESOL certification workshop accused him;

They yelled at him " do you think does it related how to make a coffee and the youngest women ??" "How come you cannot make a coffee"

In conclusion, I thought that social norm in terms of females' making tea/coffee force women to make them inferior than men, which  happens not only in Asian countries but also some American males.

I still cannot believe what happened to me.

Same old same old ~~

Same old same old.

From today, I am having the official off duty: summer holidays. Washing my clothes and cleaning up rooms in this morning.  One of my room and a kitchen are clean. I am planning to read books and make lesson plans but I have little motivation to do for them.  When I stay in my house, I am lazy so I guess I should have used my office at the uni. Ahhhh... Anyway go back to study.

Aug 9, 2011

Writing lesson plans

Again it is my off duty. While I have been listening to London riots on BBC live news, I am writing lesson plans. Today I can use my time for myself in order to start planing lesson plans.
Last night I had such a fire: motivation to plan lessons but it seems like disappearing in this morning. Anyway what I need to do is that to make a fundamental plan and go for the power point slides. You know but I am still checking info on twitter and listening to BBC instead of using my brain for making the lesson plants... Hmmmm

These books are waiting for me ....I know I know.

I respect Dr. Tim Murphy.

I am researching for whether Dr. Tim Murphy will accept me as a PhD candidate.
Since I took his classes, I am very very moved by his teaching technique. I would like to learn about English education with him. I know he teaches at NUFS graduate school with Dr. Sato. However... I do not know whether I can go back to them anyway. Anyway, my research will be continued.

By the way, this is a picture at the conference on the last weekend in Tokyo.
I respect Dr. Yashiro. I would like to study with her too. I am planning to take some of her classes from the next semester (if it is possible). Her English is excellent. I really respect her.

Noam Chomsky: My Reaction to Osama bin Laden’s Death

Noam Chomsky: My Reaction to Osama bin Laden’s Death

May 6, 2011
Bookmark and Share

We might ask ourselves how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at George W. Bush’s compound, assassinated him, and dumped his body in the Atlantic.
By Noam Chomsky
chomsky300.jpgIt’s increasingly clear that the operation was a planned assassination, multiply violating elementary norms of international law. There appears to have been no attempt to apprehend the unarmed victim, as presumably could have been done by 80 commandos facing virtually no opposition—except, they claim, from his wife, who lunged towards them. In societies that profess some respect for law, suspects are apprehended and brought to fair trial. I stress “suspects.” In April 2002, the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller, informed the press that after the most intensive investigation in history, the FBI could say no more than that it “believed” that the plot was hatched in Afghanistan, though implemented in the UAE and Germany. What they only believed in April 2002, they obviously didn’t know 8 months earlier, when Washington dismissed tentative offers by the Taliban (how serious, we do not know, because they were instantly dismissed) to extradite bin Laden if they were presented with evidence—which, as we soon learned, Washington didn’t have. Thus Obama was simply lying when he said, in his White House statement, that “we quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda.”

Nothing serious has been provided since. There is much talk of bin Laden’s “confession,” but that is rather like my confession that I won the Boston Marathon. He boasted of what he regarded as a great achievement.

There is also much media discussion of Washington’s anger that Pakistan didn’t turn over bin Laden, though surely elements of the military and security forces were aware of his presence in Abbottabad. Less is said about Pakistani anger that the U.S. invaded their territory to carry out a political assassination. Anti-American fervor is already very high in Pakistan, and these events are likely to exacerbate it. The decision to dump the body at sea is already, predictably, provoking both anger and skepticism in much of the Muslim world.
It’s like naming our murder weapons after victims of our crimes: Apache, Tomahawk… It’s as if the Luftwaffe were to call its fighter planes “Jew” and “Gypsy.”

We might ask ourselves how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at George W. Bush’s compound, assassinated him, and dumped his body in the Atlantic. Uncontroversially, his crimes vastly exceed bin Laden’s, and he is not a “suspect” but uncontroversially the “decider” who gave the orders to commit the “supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole” (quoting the Nuremberg Tribunal) for which Nazi criminals were hanged: the hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of refugees, destruction of much of the country, the bitter sectarian conflict that has now spread to the rest of the region.

There’s more to say about [Cuban airline bomber Orlando] Bosch, who just died peacefully in Florida, including reference to the “Bush doctrine” that societies that harbor terrorists are as guilty as the terrorists themselves and should be treated accordingly. No one seemed to notice that Bush was calling for invasion and destruction of the U.S. and murder of its criminal president.

Same with the name, Operation Geronimo. The imperial mentality is so profound, throughout western society, that no one can perceive that they are glorifying bin Laden by identifying him with courageous resistance against genocidal invaders. It’s like naming our murder weapons after victims of our crimes: Apache, Tomahawk… It’s as if the Luftwaffe were to call its fighter planes “Jew” and “Gypsy.” There is much more to say, but even the most obvious and elementary facts should provide us with a good deal to think about.

Why did you become a teacher?

http://www.eltcommunity.com/elt/thread/1712

Hello everyone!
I was just watching the video of 2011 Iatefl's Pecha Kucha session for 456th time and it got me thinking...
Around 2 months ago I attended a meeting at a school and this meeting was supposed to be a kind of a training session. There were around 20 people in the room and the DOS asked people to get to know one another better by asking the question: Why did you become a teacher?
That was not the first that ever happened to me and now I can pretty much say that I have a collection of interesting answers I've heard along the years...

'I like to have children around' - Valid point... not my case... people's ages were not the reason why I decided to have a go in the area....
'Because of the money' - Well... I'd like to know where this person was getting so much money. To my eye, teaching is not exactly the profession to choose if you want to become wealthy... (Sorry, guys! It had to be said!)
'I was out of a job in my area and as I can speak fairly good English I decided to try teaching so that I wouldn't starve' - another very valid point. I would go into another profession if I couldn't get around to finding a job in teaching... so why not the opposite? The only thing is, I would not try something different without being offered training to do that (and this os often what people do when they decide to teach).
'I had no idea what I wanted to do professionally and a friend suggested I try it out' - OK... so maybe you just parachuted in the profession and then discovered you got the hang of it.
'I wanted to have a job in which I would surely be the authority' - Sorry! Even though I believe that respect is the essential building block for the teacher-learner relationship, the word authority just sounds too old-fashioned for me. Also, sad but true, nowadays teachers are not really seen as the authority anymore in most of the environments where learning takes place.
'I started teaching because I liked it' - Hard to believe! We can only discover if we really like something when we start doing it. Perhaps you liked the idea of it and then after you really started your hands-on period you got to grow fond of it. I only really discovered I like teaching better than other professions after I had a go at another profession and then realized it was really not my thing...

So many different answers... I could never relate to any of them...
And then after watching the Iatefl's videos, I was remind by my own conscience the reason why I started out in the area...

As I watched the videos and learned a lot by doing this, my eyes were filled with tears... Tears of joy... I was reminded of a simple fact...

'I started TEACHING, because I never wanted to stop LEARNING'....

Thank you to all the people who participated in all the events I was ever present. You've made me grow... : )

Note for the reference; the PhD thesis

For my reference:
One of possibilities to base on the MA thesis for the PhD one:
To look at international students' clsssroom discourse and compare with Japanese one (between Japanese student in Aust and Aust student in Japan as an exchange student) One more subject....

JALT: Back to School 2011 in Osaka

One of tough but great experiences to present my paper at JALT conference was completed.
One of great teachers at Osaka Gakuin University who listened to my presentation critiqued my MA thesis. No one gave me suggestions after my presentation so far.

According to him, if I continued to used the similar research methodology I may have the similar outcomes, which is nothing new. Therefore my PhD thesis can be not so interesting. Audiences in JALT expect presenters provide new information and Aha! moment.
My presentation was predictable the conclusion.  I thought I could use the MA thesis based on and write the PhD thesis, however it seems not. Again I need to rethink and rewrite my PhD proposal.  Anyway, this is one of experiences as a bump in my life.
To he honest, I was extremely nervous to give a presentation in English. Last time in JALT international conference in Aichi, I presented my paper in Japanese because I thought it was impossible to present it in the second language. I challenged myself and I failed this time.

After I listen to his suggestions and critique, I felt too much and I was getting worried about my PhD's topic and research methodology. I felt hopeless to continue it by using similar research methodology. Now I need to start from zero.

Anyway, I am looking for this book: kindergartens' classroom observations in Hawaii, Taiwan, and one more place... this resarcher video recorded the classrooms for 24 hours on the exact same day in order to find intercultural communication among teachers and kiddies.   I have been looking for this book but I could not find it. If you know this book title please let me know.

In the conference, I met two interesting teachers who introduced flashcards in order to increase voca. Their idea on words cards is amazing. I will introduce the learning system in my class too. I really appreciate to share their teaching experiences with me. I need to improve my teaching abilities.

I will not give up on my research/PhD. I have had a strong feeling towards my research and the PhD and I need to be tough more.

I am telling myself that "don't forget this くやしい feeling" and motivate myself to complete the PhD. Now I wake up and down to the earth.

Action Research!

Action Research Day 1

One of teachers in this workshop today suggested me to read this book,
before I started to do "Action Research".  Be prepare before lessons.

A study meeting for English teachers in Aichi
I just remembered that today's speaker was a part time lecture at the uni which I graduated from.
What a small world !!

One suggestion for my teaching:
Self-reflection is essential for expand learners' meta language abilities.
According to one of participants, meta language in terms of language learning defines that how to analyze oneself's language learning  objectively.
Therefore it is important for learners to reflect what they leaned in the language classroom.
This self-evaluation method has been allied in my classroom. I will continue record students' improvement.

One more suggestion from experienced teachers is that recording my lessons by using video devices.
This my first experiment by using the video !!  Sounds like a plan.

By the way, this is my next challenge to attend to this workshop. I cannot wait for that.

Challenging in Classerooms

One of my aims is that to conduct lecturers and classrooms in English from this April.
Some of classes and lectures in both Korea and Japan may have similar difficulties and issues.

A lack of English proficiencies among teachers and students can cause big "???...????...." in their brains when the classes are conducted in English only (which is not their first language).
I will experiment it soon. It is very interesting for me when my students did not understand what I said in the classroom, how I am going to scaffold them.

A Sunday Study Meeting !

2011/03/06, Sunday

One of my colleagues was a speaker for discussion lesson today.
This is a monthly study meeting's schedule at Cultural Path Futaba Museum.

Listening practice: listening and reproduction (2 hours)
Discussion practice: approximately 1.5 hours

Today's topics are:
(1) Daigo Fukuryumaru: http://d5f.org/top.htm

in 1954, the U.S. hydrogen bomb blew up at the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The Daigo Fukuryumaru, a tuna fishing boat, was operating near the Rongelap Atoll, which was thought to be outside the warning area and was about 160km away from Bikini Atoll. A few hours later, radioactive pieces of coral reef called "Ash of Death" poured down on 23 crew members of the boat.

(2) SONY's walkman
(3) Kate Middleton & Prince William

Firstly, learners listen and take a memo while they are listening to dialogues.
Learners reproduce what they just listened to, which is a good training to improve listening and speaking proficiencies.

A workshop at University of Shizuoka

2010. 6th March, Saturday

I attended to a workshop at University of Shizuoka. I love this architecture and design of the uni buildings.

I can apply Text-based language learning and teaching in my classroom.
A role play demonstration in front of the native English teachers made me nervous. It was a great opportunity for me to be assessed by them.
I really appreciate professors and teachers who helped me at the workshop.

静岡県立大学にて、英語教員向けのワークショップがありました。
ロールプレーで先生役をつとめる事になりました。
自分の立ち振る舞いを、大学の先生にアセスメントされる貴重な経験となりました。
Text-based teaching、これ私の授業にも取り入れていきます。
